Weeds are a natural and recurring problem in any outdoor space. Weeds can sprout in virtually any soil; weeds can grow with or without quality soil conditions. Weeds can easily find their way through cracks in cement sidewalks and the very best weed barrier will eventually break down enough that those pesky weeds find a way to sprout right though. But what exactly is a weed? For the purposes of a landscape, a weed is a plant which is growing out of place. That means those non-grasses sprouting up throughout the lawn and those sort-of-pretty flowering plants that choke out the growth of landscape shrubbery or other flowering plants.
And the best defense against these types of invasive plants is to manually pull them up by the root. When you pull a weed make sure to extract the entire thing from the soil, because anything left behind will likely grow into another plant. It’s easiest to pull weeds up from their root when the ground is soft; oftentimes in the spring the ground is wet with rain or melted snow, and while these seasonal conditions also create perfect damp and cool conditions for weeds to sprout, they also make perfect conditions for the weed to be pulled free from the soil completely.
Another quality line of defense, believe it or not, is quality mulch; mulch is also one of the most environmentally-friendly options for controlling the spread of weeds. In a landscape bed, or a garden, quality mulch helps to prevent weeds from germinating. This spring consider replace any tired or deteriorating landscape and garden mulch with two-to-four inches of new mulch. To be
very weed conscious, dig up deteriorating weed barriers, add two layers of mulch, and then install a new type of weed barrier and add an additional two inches of mulch atop that. Unfortunately, landscape and garden beds don’t last forever, and they will require seasonal upkeep.
